Architecture and continuing use

Yellow sandstone fronts combine channelled masonry, depressed arches, transomed windows, pediments and carefully modelled parapets across a two-storey building raised over a basement.

Its story

Ronald Walker designed the new school after an older charitable institution on Broad Street. It opened with ambitious contemporary planning, and late twentieth-century refurbishment supported continuing primary education.

Why it is included

Its listed architecture, philanthropic roots and active school use make it a strong record of civic education.

What to notice

  • Full-blooded Queen Anne detailing.
  • Symmetrical principal elevation above the raised basement.
  • Plaque explaining the Allan educational bequest.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating school. View from public space unless invited, protect children’s privacy and do not enter school grounds without permission.
