In brief
Aberlady’s mercat cross is a compact civic monument: a square sandstone shaft rising from four stone steps in the High Street. Its scale is modest, but its position anchors the former burgh’s public centre and links the long street with the route towards the shore.

Civic marker
The cross records Aberlady’s former status as a burgh of barony. Its stepped base and simple shaft matter as part of the street as well as as an isolated object: the monument gives a point of focus within a settlement otherwise organised along one main line.
Designation clarified
The cross is currently protected as a Category A listed building under LB6505. Its separate scheduling as SM784 was removed in 2016 because of dual designation. The former schedule is retained here as designation history and is not counted as a second current protection.
