Architecture and setting
The red-stone frontage combines broad display windows with upper bays and a conical corner roof. Marble columns, an iron gate and a tiled entrance give the shop doorway unusual richness. HES also records decorative tiles and stone shelving in the former butcher’s interior.
Its story
Council minutes cited by HES record John Irvine’s house-and-shop proposal in December 1889. A dated shield reads 1890 and another part bears 1912, indicating more than one stage of work. Commercial display and domestic accommodation were designed together.
Why it is included
A decorated corner shop and upper housing turn an ordinary crossroads into an architectural focus.

Reading the surroundings
Use public routes and advertised visitor arrangements. Respect private rooms, working premises and any barriers; the map does not confer access.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
Neither continued butcher’s use nor survival of every recorded interior fitting has been independently confirmed. View from public streets and enter only premises open to customers.
