History
South Street was laid out in 1808 beside the Huntly–Banff turnpike, extending the eighteenth-century planned village. Number 23 belongs to the early nineteenth-century phase that gave this new route a more formal residential frontage.
Architecture and setting
The two-storey, three-bay granite house has a symmetrical composition, a cavetto-moulded door surround and a distinctive squat Venetian window. Those details give architectural emphasis to a compact house while preserving the planned settlement’s close relationship between building line and street.
