Architecture and continuing use

A polished-ashlar pedestal carries a plain obelisk. Inscription panels and a dated pediment are enriched by an anthemion and stylised crests, concentrating the commemorative programme at eye level beneath the tall shaft.

Its story

Weaver James Wilson helped organise Strathaven participants in the 1820 rising and was executed in Glasgow on 30 August that year. Public subscription funded the memorial; Betty Turnbull laid its foundation stone on 28 April 1846. Later interpretation has continued to debate the rising’s meanings and Wilson’s place in reform history.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a substantial civic memorial whose inscription records how nineteenth-century Strathaven publicly recast a convicted radical as a patriotic reformer.

What to notice

  • The long inscription explaining Wilson’s rehabilitation.
  • Anthemion and crest motifs around the obelisk base.
  • The monument’s relationship to castle, route and town centre.

Reading the surroundings

View from public space without climbing the pedestal or obstructing traffic. Treat the inscription and stonework carefully and follow any maintenance barriers.
