Architecture and continuing use
Two principal buildings form an asymmetrical seven-bay frontage with dormers, canted bays and a cart arch leading to a square courtyard. Rear outbuildings recall service and stabling functions. Inside, a stone stair, tiled floor and stained glass showing a buck and doe survive from later hotel improvement.
Its story
The buildings originated in the earlier nineteenth century and were identified as an inn by the late 1890s. Dated rainwater hoppers show work in 1900; early twentieth-century motoring guides advertised hotel, garage and inspection facilities. Recent planning material includes the property within a proposed Townhead development, but completion is not established.
Why it is included
Category C listing recognises a prominent and unusually complete former hotel complex whose street frontage, courtyard and fittings record changing patterns of travel and town-centre commerce.
What to notice
- The cart arch connecting street frontage and courtyard.
- Varied dormers and canted windows across the long elevation.
- Dated hoppers and surviving animal-themed stained glass if lawfully visible.
Reading the surroundings
Treat all interiors, pend and courtyard as private unless a current operator clearly invites access. Observe from public space and do not assume planning proposals have opened the property.
Timeline
- earlier 19th century Domestic and commercial buildings developed around a square courtyard.
- 1898 Ordnance Survey mapping identified the complex as an inn.
- 1900 Dated hoppers mark a substantial phase of improvement.
- 1923 The Michelin guide listed the hotel with facilities for motorists.
