Architecture and continuing use

The monument places a female figure on a square ashlar plinth with a bronze bust and inscription. A tipped vessel and coiled serpents use medical imagery, although the figure’s right hand has been lost.

Its story

The memorial was erected after Walker’s death in 1885 to recognise a life described locally as devoted to public wellbeing. Its formal sculpture and prominent street position make professional service part of the town centre.

Why it is included

It adds health, public gratitude and late-Victorian sculpture to a sample otherwise dominated by buildings.

What to notice

  • The bronze portrait on the west face.
  • Serpents carved on the sides and around the vessel.
  • Damage and weathering that have changed the figure’s silhouette.

Reading the surroundings

View from the public realm without stepping into traffic or blocking entrances. Do not climb the plinth or touch the bronze and carved surfaces.
