Architecture and continuing use

The two painted houses are built of roughly squared granite with raised window margins. Number 63 has a three-bay front and central gabled timber porch; number 61 is two bays wide with an enlarged bipartite opening beside its door. Slate roofs, axial stacks, flat skews and painted rubble street walls unify the pair despite their differences.

Its story

Constructed early in the nineteenth century, the houses belong to the coherent historic Main Street group. Later rear lean-tos and an enlarged window at number 61 show adaptation without removing the essential paired form recorded by the designation.

Why it is included

The group demonstrates the importance of boundary walls and shared roofline, not simply individual façades, in creating Auchencairn’s historic street enclosure.

What to notice

  • The difference between the three-bay and two-bay houses.
  • Roughly squared granite visible beneath painted finishes.
  • Boundary walls continuing the building line along the street.

Reading the surroundings
