Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey front is arranged in three bays with a central doorway and single-light sash-and-case windows. Painted rubble is sharpened by raised painted margins, while coped end stacks terminate the slate roof. The building’s position on sharply falling ground is essential to its character and to the changing levels along Main Street.

Its story

Built early in the nineteenth century, Blairmae belongs to the phase in which Auchencairn’s Main Street acquired a continuous sequence of substantial houses. The designation does not identify a designer or institutional origin, so its value rests in surviving domestic form and streetscape relationship.

Why it is included

It shows how a standard symmetrical house type was adjusted to local topography within the historic core.

What to notice

  • The central doorway maintaining symmetry on uneven ground.
  • Raised painted margins around the openings.
  • Coped stacks at both ends of the slate roof.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the house and its ground as private. Observe from a lawful public route and take care where levels and traffic restrict the viewing position.
