Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The harled gable faces the street while a longer rubble-built range continues into Steeple Close. Unequal bays, deep-set windows, a lozenge fanlight and low store range preserve the building’s incremental development.

Its story

The house took shape around the turn of the eighteenth century and accumulated later alterations. Its adaptation as part of the Tolbooth Arts Centre connected ordinary historic fabric with Kirkcudbright’s modern exhibition life.

Why it is included

The building adds a human scale and an explicit adaptive-reuse story beside the monumental Tolbooth, without duplicating the older civic structure.

What to notice

  • Simple gable end to the High Street.
  • Lozenge-pattern fanlight.
  • Irregular close elevation revealing several phases.
