Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Polished red sandstone defines the formal three-bay front, with rusticated piers, a balcony and Venetian window above the entrance. A longer granite return and the inscribed frieze record the original combination of library, museum, reading room and hall.

Its story

The Town Hall was completed in 1879 as a multi-purpose civic building. After its older collections moved elsewhere, a major conversion created Kirkcudbright Galleries, which opened in 2018 with purpose-designed exhibition spaces.

Why it is included

High-quality civic architecture, direct continuity with municipal collecting and successful cultural reuse make the Galleries a cornerstone of the artists’ town.

What to notice

  • Venetian window above the entrance balcony.
  • Frieze naming the original public functions.
  • Contrast between red-sandstone front and granite return.

Reading the surroundings

Consult the Galleries for opening hours, exhibitions and accessibility. Admission conditions can vary for special shows, and collection stores and service areas are not public.
