Architecture and continuing use

The aisled church has a clerestory, buttressed gabled front and deeply moulded round-arched entrance. Ball-flower ornament, stained glass and a later hall enrich the complex; key internal church fittings remain.

Its story

Built after the Disruption for a Free Church congregation, it became Sandgate Church and closed in 1981. Conversion as the West Kirk preserved the principal volume and several fittings.

Why it is included

The legibility of church fabric within continuing public use makes this an accessible example of thoughtful adaptation.

What to notice

  • Chevron moulding around the main doorway.
  • Ball-flower details and stained glass.
  • Former pulpit, gallery and screen walls within the pub interior.
