Architecture and continuing use
The modern museum provides two levels of exhibition and learning space organised around large objects, recreated settings, archives and visitor circulation. Its accessible public frontage differs deliberately from the dispersed and hazardous factory landscape, allowing industrial processes and workers’ stories to be read together in a safe interior.
Its story
Local volunteers created a museum in 1997 to preserve the history of HM Factory Gretna and its communities. Growth of the collection led to a purpose-built museum at Stanfield, opened on 1 July 2014. Displays now cover explosives manufacture, the women known as the Gretna Girls, wartime townships and later conflict and local memory.
Why it is included
It is the principal public gateway to Eastriggs’s industrial heritage and demonstrates how community collecting can turn an inaccessible production landscape into shared interpretation.
What to notice
- The building’s role as a clear public threshold to a dispersed industrial story.
- Large objects and recreated settings used to explain factory work.
- Links among museum, village streets and surviving factory landscape.
Reading the surroundings
Check current opening times, admission charges and accessibility guidance on the museum website. Follow staff instructions and do not treat a museum visit as permission to enter the former factory site.
