Architecture and continuing use

The monument rises from a stepped base beside Annan Road, giving inscribed faces clear visibility from the surrounding open ground and village approach. Its masonry, plaques and later commemorative additions gather individual names within a deliberately prominent public setting. This record concerns the parish war memorial, not the separate Animals in War monument at the museum.

Its story

Dornock Parish’s memorial committee ordered the monument on 19 November 1919. It was erected on 28 September 1920 and unveiled four days later, providing a focus for grief after the First World War. Later inscriptions extended commemoration. Recent council reporting records continued care and recognition in regional war-memorial awards.

Why it is included

It links the planned factory village to parish identity, wartime loss and a century of public remembrance while remaining physically distinct from the factory and museum records.

What to notice

  • The stepped base raising the memorial above roadside ground.
  • Inscribed panels naming individuals rather than only battles.
  • Its open relationship to Annan Road and the village edge.

Reading the surroundings

Approach only by safe public routes and take care beside traffic. Respect wreaths, ceremonies and other visitors; do not climb, clean or attach objects to the memorial.
