Architecture and continuing use

A circular basin supports a square pedestal with burgh arms, nautical ornament, dolphins and putti. Smaller upper basins rise to an otter balancing on a ball with a fish.

Its story

Iron founder James Steven presented the fountain after Ayr improved its municipal water supply. Later restoration linked it to the town-twinning era; recent council monitoring records significant repair needs.

Why it is included

Its distinctive cast-iron design connects infrastructure, philanthropy, civic identity and the changing condition of seafront monuments.

What to notice

  • Dolphins and putti supporting the upper basin.
  • Burgh arms on the pedestal.
  • Otter-and-fish finial at the summit.

Reading the surroundings

View from public promenade routes and obey any repair barriers. Do not drink from or climb the structure unless current signage explicitly permits use.
