Architecture and continuing use

Sandstone ashlar walls, mullioned windows and projecting gables create a clear school composition. Quatrefoil panels and lancets give the end blocks a restrained Gothic character.

Its story

The later nineteenth-century building replaced an earlier Townhead School. It came under St Margaret’s Roman Catholic School in 1963 and remains an active council primary school.

Why it is included

It represents everyday educational architecture and continuing use rather than only the town’s grander civic monuments.

What to notice

  • Quatrefoil panels in the gables.
