Architecture and continuing use

The symmetrical sandstone block centres on an in-antis Ionic entrance reached by shallow steps. Single-storey wings and colonnaded links extend the façade, while a clock drum supports the gilded semi-elliptical dome.

Its story

David Logan designed the Academy’s principal block in 1815. The entrance screen followed in 1841, and substantial modern teaching ranges were added behind the surviving historic front.

Why it is included

It demonstrates the importance placed on burgh education through an ambitious Classical composition that remains part of a large active school.

What to notice

  • The central Ionic columns and three fanlit doorways.
  • The clock drum and gilded dome above the parapet.
  • The contrast between the historic front and modern ranges behind.

Reading the surroundings

This is an active school, not a visitor attraction. View from public streets and respect pupil safeguarding, privacy and school operations; do not enter without permission.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The 1960 and later additions changed the interior and rear substantially. The listed interest is concentrated in the principal block, screens and boundary features.
