Architecture and continuing use
The painted-ashlar front centres on a roll-moulded doorway beneath a crocketed ogee hood. Crenellated buttresses rise to pinnacles, while traceried windows, stained glass and timber furnishings enrich the church and later sanctuary.
Its story
James Dempster designed the church in 1826 as Catholic public worship re-established itself in Ayr. D. Sturrock added transepts and sanctuary in 1893, and the church became the diocesan cathedral in 2007.
Why it is included
It records the nineteenth-century Catholic revival, the work of a little-represented regional architect and a major recent change in ecclesiastical status.
What to notice
- Crocketed finials rising above the roofline.
- The traceried west window and crenellated parapet.
- The relationship between the 1826 nave and 1893 transepts and sanctuary.
Reading the surroundings
The cathedral publishes Mass and sacramental times. Visitors should respect worship, private prayer, funerals and graveyard use; check the parish site before a special journey.
