Architecture and continuing use
The asymmetrical four-bay frontage rises three storeys and an attic, with a bell-cast turret enlivening the terrace. Inside, oak joinery, fitted furniture and Oscar Paterson stained glass create an unusually coherent Glasgow Style domestic interior.
Its story
J. Gaff Gillespie designed the house in 1900 as part of University Gardens’ affluent residential development. The University acquired it in the 1950s and adapted the rooms for academic work while retaining significant decorative fabric.
Why it is included
Category A status, exceptional integrated interior design and a well-matched contemporary academic use make Salmon House a key west-end record.
What to notice
- The bell-cast turret breaking the terrace roofline.
