Architecture and continuing use
The stone figure stands on a corniced light-grey granite plinth. Stepped and bull-faced base courses lift the sculpture above street level while keeping the composition compact enough to read against the Town Hall.
Its story
The Edinburgh sculptor John Hutchison completed the statue in 1879, during a period of strong public commemoration of medieval Scottish figures. Its prominent placement brought the Bruce story into Lochmaben’s civic centre rather than leaving it solely at the two castle sites.
Why it is included
The monument shows how nineteenth-century sculpture shaped the burgh’s public identity and connected medieval history with a deliberately composed civic streetscape.
What to notice
- The contrast between the stone figure and pale granite pedestal.
- The stepped, rough-faced courses at the foot of the plinth.
