Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey, three-bay building is harled with painted ashlar margins. A central doorway has a decorative fanlight and consoled segmental pediment; a second pediment rises to an apex stack at the wall head. Graded slates, corniced stacks and varied sash glazing retain traditional character.

Its story

The building was erected in the earlier nineteenth century and later altered for continuing commercial use. HES recorded a public bar at ground level and highlighted the prominent position opposite Bruce Street. The listing text was updated in 2021, but it is not a live business directory.

Why it is included

It represents the town centre’s social and commercial fabric and shows how modest harled construction can be given strong civic presence through pediments and a carefully placed stack.

What to notice

  • The decorative fanlight above the central doors.
  • A segmental entrance pediment below the larger wall-head pediment.
  • The apex chimney stack completing the central vertical line.

Reading the surroundings

Do not assume the premises are currently trading. Observe from public streets and enter only if a clearly operating business invites public access.

Timeline

  1. Earlier 19th century The two-storey public-house building was constructed in Castle Street.
  2. 3 August 1971 Its architectural and townscape interest received Category B listing.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The designation records a public bar historically but does not confirm present trading, ownership or interior condition.
