Architecture and continuing use

The single-storey house is built of coursed stone beneath a slated, skew-gabled roof. Lower offices with hipped roofs terminate the range, giving the small group a clear functional hierarchy.

Its story

Raw Farm belongs to the earlier nineteenth-century farming landscape east of East Calder. Quarrying, lime burning and railway construction later transformed nearby ground, but the farmhouse remained a distinct reminder of the area’s agricultural organisation.

Why it is included

It balances the cohort’s large industrial structures with the domestic and working architecture of the rural landscape from which they emerged.

What to notice

  • The long, low single-storey silhouette.
  • Skewed gables to the central house.
  • Lower hipped offices attached at the ends.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the entire property as private and potentially operational. Do not enter fields, yards or access tracks without permission.
