Architecture and continuing use

The one-and-a-half-storey cottage has a coursed-stone body, an ashlar front and a slated skew-gabled roof. A cornice and blocking course sharpen the wall head, while engaged columns and an architraved cornice make the entrance unusually formal for a modest house. Lower piended additions extend both ends.

Its story

The building belongs to East Calder’s earlier nineteenth-century domestic development. Its restrained Georgian proportions contrast with the later industrial structures and large housing areas that transformed the settlement.

Why it is included

It represents the ordinary but carefully designed domestic architecture of the pre-industrial village and broadens the cohort beyond monuments and infrastructure.

What to notice

  • The ashlar-faced front against the coursed side walls.
  • Engaged columns and a corniced surround at the doorway.
  • Lower hipped additions attached to both gable ends.
