Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
The compact rectangular church retains thick coursed-sandstone walls and complete gables. Buttresses, two opposing doors, blocked windows and reused thirteenth-century carved capitals reveal several building phases.
Its story
The church probably originated in the twelfth or thirteenth century and belonged to Paisley Abbey’s network. Eighteenth-century window alterations preceded the end of worship in 1779; repair consent in 2020 supported conservation within the burial ground.
Why it is included
National scheduling, substantial medieval fabric and its close relationship with Prestwick’s burgh and burial history make this a foundational record.
What to notice
- Opposing pointed-arched doorways.
- Massive buttressed gables.
- Blocked openings containing reused carved capitals.
Reading the surroundings
The ruin stands within an active historic burial ground. Use clear paths, do not enter unstable or closed masonry, avoid touching carved stones and give priority to mourners and cemetery work.
