Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
The cross consists of a chamfered square shaft, moulded cap and ball finial on a stepped square base. Weathering distinguishes the older base from the shaft inscribed with its eighteenth-century rebuilding.
Its story
Burgh records mention a damaged cross in 1473. The shaft was rebuilt in 1777 and the monument moved to its present public setting in 1963, retaining older base stones and a long civic association.
Why it is included
Category A status, documented medieval origins and clear public visibility make the cross the natural starting point for Prestwick’s architectural story.
What to notice
- Ball finial and moulded cornice.
- Inscription recording the 1777 rebuilding.
- Weathered stepped base beneath the later shaft.
Reading the surroundings
The cross stands in public space close to traffic and pedestrian movement. View it from safe pavement areas, keep the steps clear and do not climb or lean objects against the stonework.
Timeline
- 1473 Burgh records described the market cross as already broken.
- 1777 A rebuilt shaft renewed the civic monument.
- 1963 The cross was relocated from its earlier Kirk Street setting.
- 2016 Scheduling ended while Category A listing continued protection.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The precise age and original position of the older base stones remain less certain than the documented later changes.
