Architecture and continuing use

The asymmetrical yellow-ashlar house rises through two storeys and an attic. An octagonal corner bay carries an ogival lead roof, while a sculpted doorway, canted windows, small-paned lights, broad eaves and wall-head stacks provide a varied Arts and Crafts silhouette.

Its story

Built around 1900 as a house, the property became Orchard Nursing Home in 1947 and a hotel in 1962. Its current operator continues the hospitality use and highlights surviving cornices, double oriel windows and the sweeping oak staircase.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a richly modelled turn-of-the-century villa and a clear sequence of residential, care and hospitality reuse.

What to notice

  • The finialled ogival roof above the octagonal corner bay.
  • The sculpted entrance in its shallow full-height projection.
  • Broad eaves and mixed small-pane and plate-glass windows.

Reading the surroundings

Use the hotel only through normal booking, dining or event arrangements. Guest areas and bedrooms are private, and exterior viewing should not obstruct the busy Park Road junction.
