Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The whitewashed rubble tollhouse is a low rectangular building under a hipped slate roof. A bowed bay beside the doorway, latticed glazing and modest ashlar details give the roadside front both visibility and domestic scale.

Its story

The building served the toll-road system in the early nineteenth century and later became associated with Gretna’s visitor and wedding economy. Gretna Green Ltd now identifies Old Toll Bar among its trading names and describes its revival as part of the family business.

Why it is included

The building broadens the Place story from the famous smithy to the transport infrastructure that channelled travellers across the national border.

What to notice

  • Bowed bay beside the entrance.
  • Iron lamp bracket and latticed casements.
  • Low outbuilding range behind the principal tollhouse.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the premises as a managed business rather than a public monument. Follow current operator signage and do not enter closed, private or service areas.

Timeline

  1. Early 19th century The tollhouse was established beside the border road.
  2. 20th century Visitor and wedding activity succeeded the original toll function.
  3. 2026 Old Toll Bar remains a Gretna Green Ltd trading identity.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Current sources establish the operator and trading identity but do not justify describing every space or outbuilding as normally open to visitors.
