Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The original five-bay, two-storey house stands over a basement and is framed by later wings. Whitewashed rubble, painted ashlar margins, small-paned sashes and a pedimented porch give the composition a restrained Georgian character.

Its story

Built as a private house in 1710, Gretna Hall acquired flanking wings and later functioned as a coaching inn. Its present hotel, dining and ceremony uses continue a long history of accommodating travellers and marriage parties.

Why it is included

Early domestic fabric, coaching history, later additions and active hospitality use make the Hall a substantial counterpart to Gretna Green’s humbler smithy tradition.

What to notice

  • Pedimented entrance porch above the front steps.
  • Single-bay wings added to the original five-bay house.
  • Small-paned windows and surviving gatepiers.
