Architecture and continuing use

Snecked rubble and freestone dressings form an Early Decorated church with double transepts and an apsidal north range. The south-east tower has a truncated pyramidal roof and timber belfry where an intended spire was never built.

Its story

Wardrop’s church replaced a 1754 predecessor in 1867 and incorporated a Bute family vault. Ballantyne supplied stained glass in the same building campaign. The church now forms part of the united South East Ayrshire congregation.

Why it is included

The building joins town-centre identity, continuing worship, Bute patronage and a well-documented Victorian design that deliberately retained an unfinished tower profile.

What to notice

  • The tower’s timber belfry in place of the intended spire.
  • Double transepts and apsidal north range.
  • Ballantyne stained glass dating from the 1867 campaign.

Reading the surroundings

Check current worship or event times before entry. Respect services, safeguarding and the vault; access to tower, vestries and private rooms is not assumed.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The public record does not explain why the spire was omitted or document every alteration after 1867.
