Architecture and continuing use

The main two-storey and attic range has buff rubble walls, a central entrance, oriel and dormer windows. Red-rubble rear and side additions show several nineteenth-century phases around the older rectangular core.

Its story

The hotel originated in the late eighteenth century and expanded through successive nineteenth-century wings and alterations. A major refurbishment in 2011 adapted the historic complex for modern accommodation, dining and events.

Why it is included

The building preserves a long-running commercial use and illustrates how a modest early inn accumulated increasingly substantial accommodation beside Cumnock’s civic centre.

What to notice

  • Buff rubble of the original range beside red-stone additions.
  • Oriel and ball-finialled dormer windows on Glaisnock Street.
  • Splayed entrance detail at the earlier side wing.

Reading the surroundings
