Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey and attic sandstone front has mullioned windows, shaped dormers and separate public and vehicle entrances. Carved lions, thistles and the inscription “E Post Office R” turn government service into architectural display.

Its story

William Thomas Oldrieve designed the building in 1907 while responsible for provincial post offices in Scotland. Later sorting and office additions expanded the site, while the principal Bridge Street block retained its identity.

Why it is included

It links communications infrastructure, government architecture and a continuing everyday service in a particularly well-preserved burgh frontage.

What to notice

  • The two distinct arched entrances for people and postal operations.
  • Lion and thistle carvings on the dormer heads.
  • The royal post-office inscription above the principal doorway.

Reading the surroundings

Royal Mail publishes limited customer-service hours. The operational sorting areas are private workplaces; use only the signed public entrance and check current hours before travel.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Later buildings on the site are included in the statutory record’s notes but have a different date and architectural character from Oldrieve’s principal block.
