Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The two-storey structure uses local flagstone walls and a flagged roof with a vent. A forestair serves the upper floor, while the lade running beneath the building explains the mill’s placement and former power source.

Its story

Probably built in the eighteenth century, the mill formed part of the working Skaill estate alongside house, farm buildings and managed fields. It later fell out of use but retains the defining relationship between building and water channel.

Why it is included

Category C listing protects a clearly legible rural industrial building whose survival broadens the Bay of Skaill story beyond elite residence and prehistoric archaeology.

What to notice

  • The lade passing below the building.
  • The external forestair to the upper floor.
  • Flagstone used for both walls and roof.

Reading the surroundings

The mill is disused and no public interior access is advertised. View only from lawful routes, avoid the lade and unstable surfaces, and respect estate operations.

Timeline

  1. Probably 18th century The estate constructed a water-powered mill over the lade.
  2. 19th century The mill served the agricultural landscape around Skaill.
  3. 20th century Milling ceased, leaving the building disused.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The official record gives an eighteenth-century date only tentatively and does not identify the machinery or the date when work ceased.
