Architecture and continuing use

Pink snecked rubble and yellow ashlar define a low extended H-plan school, with gabled cross-wings, stepped tripartite windows, pointed openings and a central bellcote. The neighbouring schoolhouse echoes its materials and detail.

Its story

The school opened in 1876 and later gained the 1896 schoolhouse. Merkinch Primary moved to a new purpose-built campus in 2020; the family centre moved into the renovated old school in 2022.

Why it is included

It demonstrates how a strong Victorian educational landmark can continue serving families after its original school function moved elsewhere.

What to notice

  • Central gabled bellcote.
  • Stepped tripartite windows in the cross-wings.
  • Pink rubble contrasted with yellow ashlar.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating family service, not an open visitor attraction. View from public space unless attending an arranged activity and respect the privacy of children and families.
