Architecture and continuing use

Three principal storeys and an attic extend across a long ashlar frontage, with bowed corners helping the building address several streets. Regular windows, cornices and later roof additions give the large commercial block a disciplined skyline.

Its story

William Lawrie designed the Douglas Hotel in James Matthews’s office in 1863. Alterations included roof additions in 1937; the principal hotel component now trades as Mercure Inverness Hotel.

Why it is included

It is a major surviving expression of Victorian Inverness’s growth as a transport, tourism and commercial centre.

What to notice

  • Long sixteen-bay Union Street frontage.
  • Bowed corners addressing street junctions.
  • Later additions along the roofline.

Reading the surroundings

The hotel is a commercial business. Public access is for guests and customers; view other parts of the group from public streets and respect separate shop occupiers.
