Architecture and continuing use
The slightly humped bridge uses a flat segmental arch with raised channel-jointed voussoirs between pilaster-like supports. Curved approaches and ashlar parapets widen the crossing into the adjoining streets.
Its story
The bridge belongs to the early nineteenth-century improvement of roads and crossings around Cumnock. It remained part of the town’s transport network as later railway viaducts transformed the same Lugar valley.
Why it is included
Its restrained masonry design records an earlier phase of transport infrastructure and the practical importance of river crossings to Cumnock’s growth.
What to notice

- Raised channel-jointed voussoirs around the arch.
- Curved and splayed approaches broadening toward the streets.
