Architecture and continuing use

A two-storey centre and long single-storey wings form a roughly symmetrical station range. Whinstone rubble contrasts with red ashlar dressings, while crow steps, dormer heads, prominent stacks and a surviving cast-iron chimneypiece enrich the composition.

Its story

Lockerbie opened as an intermediate station on the Caledonian Railway route between Glasgow and Carlisle in 1848. A branch to Lochmaben followed in 1863 and closed in 1966, while the main line was later electrified and remains in passenger use.

Why it is included

The station is one of the clearest surviving architectural records of the railway’s decisive role in Lockerbie’s growth and long-distance connections.

What to notice

  • Crow-stepped gables along the main station block.
  • The contrast between whinstone walling and red ashlar dressings.
  • The long relationship between the building, platforms and Station Square.

Reading the surroundings

Use only passenger areas and follow operator signage. Platforms and footbridges are working railway infrastructure; never enter the track, staff areas or land beyond public boundaries.
