Architecture and continuing use

Red brick is patterned with yellow bands, nail-head ornament and round arches with bull’s-head keystones. Alternate faces carry louvred openings and corbelled eaves beneath a faceted slate roof and tall ventilating lantern.

Its story

Lockerbie had a long-established livestock tryst before the present mart. The ring was probably built around 1890, when permanent auction buildings replaced older seasonal market arrangements. Current sale contacts and fixtures confirm that livestock trading continues at Sydney Place.

Why it is included

The mart is a rare surviving pre-First World War livestock sale ring whose distinctive plan and continuing use connect architecture directly with the agricultural economy.

What to notice

  • The octagonal sale-ring plan.
  • Yellow brick bands and bull’s-head keystones.
  • The tall louvred lantern and onion-shaped finial.

Reading the surroundings

This is an active livestock workplace. Visit only for advertised sales or with permission, follow staff directions and biosecurity rules, and keep clear of animals, loading areas and moving vehicles.
