Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey rubble villa has ashlar dressings, a pilastered central doorway and an uneven mixture of bowed and straight bays. Twelve-pane sash windows and a hipped slate roof preserve its early character. A former coach house or stable and substantial walled entrances extend the architectural group.

Its story

The villa developed during the earlier nineteenth century at Loanhead’s eastern edge. Its gates may have belonged to an entrance to Mavisbank House, strengthening the property’s landscape association even though its exact early arrangement is uncertain.

Why it is included

Linden Lodge shows how villas, service buildings and boundaries shaped the transition from Loanhead’s streets to the Mavisbank landscape.

What to notice

  • The pilastered central doorway.
  • A bowed rear bay within an otherwise irregular plan.
  • The separate former coach-house or stable range.
