Architecture and continuing use

Single-storey red ashlar elevations turn the corner in a balanced composition, with a pedimented doorway, deep parapet and a roof ventilator providing strong accents. The low scale makes its careful carving especially visible from the pavement.

Its story

George Simpson designed the library in 1913. After more than a century of public use, Glasgow Life closed it temporarily for an extensive refurbishment with reopening planned for winter 2026–2027.

Why it is included

The project offers an important test of how a well-loved historic branch library can be made accessible and sustainable for continued community use.

What to notice

  • Pedimented entrance.
  • Deep parapet unifying the corner elevations.
  • Distinctive roof ventilator.

Reading the surroundings

The library is closed during refurbishment and visitors should not expect entry. Check Glasgow Life’s live page for construction updates, alternative services and the eventual reopening date.
