Architecture and continuing use
Thirteen polished-sandstone bays use rustication, giant Ionic pilasters, broken pediments and a bowed curtain wall. Marble, parquet, coloured glass and early ventilation fittings enrich the surviving offices.
Its story
Patons used architecture and high-quality interiors to project the scale of its international wool business. After production ceased, careful adaptation retained the most significant offices while introducing a contrasting civic atrium.
Why it is included
Industrial history, outstanding architecture, preserved interiors and successful civic reuse support Category A status.
What to notice
- The great bowed sandstone entrance screen.
- Dates and heraldic sculpture within the Baroque facade.
- Historic interiors meeting the modern glass atrium.
Reading the surroundings
The building is a working council headquarters. Use public reception and service areas only; conservation repairs in 2026 may change entrances or views.

What we know — and what remains uncertain
The 1903-04 office is separately listed from the attached 1936 despatch warehouse; this record does not treat them as one building.
