Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
A semicircular ditch approximately four metres wide defines an enclosure about 70 metres across. A possible internal palisade suggests more than one boundary phase.
Its story
Agriculture removed visible relief but preserved subsurface features. Aerial evidence led to scheduling and inclusion in the council’s wider conservation-area archaeological context.
Why it is included
The site represents ordinary prehistoric domestic life, balancing the more conspicuous military and funerary monuments in the launch group.
What to notice
- Curving ditch visible only as an aerial cropmark.
- Possible inner palisade alignment.
- No standing remains in the modern field.
Reading the surroundings
This is working farmland without a prepared visitor route. Do not enter the field; understand the monument through maps and aerial records.
Timeline
- Late 20th century Aerial reconnaissance recorded the ploughed-flat enclosure.
- 1993 National scheduling protected its buried remains.
- 2024 The adopted Girvan conservation study retained it in the local archaeological context.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
No excavation has confirmed the date, occupation sequence or presence of individual roundhouses.
