Engaged Roman Doric columns flank the arch and continue around its returns. A balustraded wall, corniced piers, spearhead gates and paired obelisks frame a forecourt containing earlier monuments.
Its story
The churchyard contains eighteenth- and nineteenth-century memorials, while the ceremonial entrance was added in 1908. The burial ground remains within the council’s cemetery estate.
Why it is included
The architectural entrance and older memorial landscape together document how public commemoration changed over several generations.
