Architecture and continuing use
The single-storey H-plan front uses bull-faced sandstone, gablets, trefoil-headed windows, a bellcote and carved Ayr arms to give the school a robust Gothic character.

Dated 1883 and formerly known as Smith’s Institution, the school received a southern extension in 1997 and remains an active primary school.

It is a strong survival of late nineteenth-century institutional design whose original educational purpose continues.
