Architecture and continuing use

Two E-plan ranges stand at right angles in extensive grounds. Towers, pinnacles, hoodmoulded windows and tall grouped chimneys create a Tudor silhouette, with the western range deliberately more elaborate than the eastern.

Its story

The Glasgow Royal Asylum commissioned Charles Wilson’s Gartnavel buildings in the early 1840s. Separate ranges and differences in architectural richness reflected distinctions between patients and accommodation.

Why it is included

The complex is nationally important hospital architecture and remains central to the history and provision of mental-health care in Glasgow.

What to notice

  • The entrance tower rising above the long western range.
  • Portrait-head label stops associated with Victoria and Albert.
  • Differences in detail between the two principal patient ranges.
