Architecture and continuing use
The three-storey, five-bay ashlar front is ordered by sill courses, a ground-floor cornice and a deep scrolled blocking course. A stop-chamfered central doorway, crested pediment and carved roundels give emphasis to the middle bay.
Its story
The building was erected in 1852 on the site traditionally associated with the birth of John Brown of Marlee. Its hotel form reflects Blairgowrie’s growing importance to road travel, trade and visitors during the nineteenth century.
Why it is included
Category B listing recognises a well-composed classical commercial building whose scale and historical inscription contribute strongly to Allan Street.
What to notice
- The crested square pediment over the central doorway.
- Carved roundels flanking the first-floor centre window.
- The scrolled blocking course above the eaves.
Reading the surroundings
Treat the building as private commercial or residential premises unless a current occupier clearly advertises public opening. View from the pavement without obstructing doors or looking into windows.
