Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The L-plan building rises through two and three storeys beneath shaped gables and a pyramidal corner tower. Green chlorite-slate rubble, red sandstone dressings, coloured leaded glass and decorative ridge tiles create a confident streetscape landmark.

Its story

The hotel was completed in 1899 to serve a growing town and travellers arriving at the railway station opposite. Later known as the Palace Hotel, it underwent full refurbishment and reopened as the Townhouse in 2015.
