Architecture and continuing use

The principal block has two storeys and three regularly spaced windows beneath a slated roof. A small entrance stair and an L-plan rear wing give depth to the otherwise plain early nineteenth-century frontage.

Its story

The building developed as the Kintore Arms Hotel at the old market centre. Its rear stables were altered before the listing survey, reflecting the changing needs of road travel and commercial hospitality.

Why it is included

Category B listing protects a modest but important component of The Square, where accommodation, refreshment and transport once met civic and market activity.

What to notice

  • The regular three-window granite frontage.
  • The entrance raised above pavement level.
  • The relationship between the hotel and the Town House across The Square.

Reading the surroundings

Use only publicly advertised hospitality areas and respect staff, guests and private accommodation. Check the operator directly before a special journey; do not enter rear service areas.

Timeline

  1. Early 1800s The granite inn was built beside Kintore’s market square.
  2. 1972 The Kintore Arms entered the statutory list at Category B.
  3. 21st century The historic premises continued in hospitality use under a new trading name.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The building identity is secure, but commercial names, opening hours and the use of individual rooms are changeable and were not treated as permanent facts.
