The building and its setting
The 1990 HES photograph shows grouped upper windows above separate shopfronts. Pedimented dormers interrupt a slate roof, with a much larger central curved pediment split around an upright finial. Stone panels and mouldings give the upper floors a common identity despite the different businesses below.
Its story
The national record identifies this address with the Bellshill and Mossend Co-operative Society and classifies its accommodation as shops, flats and offices. The photograph records later separate shop uses. It provides a dated point in the building’s history, without establishing when each business moved in or when the society ceased using the premises.
Why it is included
Includes the commercial and domestic fabric essential to understanding Main Street.
What to look for
- The large broken curved pediment and central finial
- The distinction between the unified upper frontage and individual shops
Reading the surroundings
Use public streets and respect private entrances. Check opening and access arrangements before entering any building.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
Neither a precise building date nor an architect has been established. The 1990 photograph does not verify present tenants or the survival of every detail. No statutory designation has been established from the consulted sources. The council plan supplies town-centre context, not a history of this particular property.
