The building and its setting

The HES photograph of 1990 records a two-storey stone frontage with repeated tall windows, strongly modelled vertical piers and horizontal cornices. An entrance with a semicircular fanlight punctuates the otherwise regular sequence. The broad street elevation makes education conspicuous within the commercial centre.

Its story

The national record classifies the building as nineteenth century. A later intervention is documented in detail by contractor WH Kirkwood: in March–May 2019 the former music department was adapted as a Community Learning and Development Hub. New partitions and glazing, renewed services and a separate entrance allowed a different programme to fit within existing school accommodation.

Why it is included

Documents ordinary public provision, a major street frontage and evidence-led reuse.
