Architecture and continuing use

Eighteen bays of squared rubble are grouped by projecting gables, pedimented dormers, carved flowers and thistles. Tall windows, rooflights and open-beamed halls served classrooms, while outbuildings and former shelters preserve the organisation of the school grounds.

Its story

William Williamson completed the school in 1904 for Auchterderran and Ballingry. Later additions expanded it before closure in 1989, after which educational support services occupied the complex. Current public listings identify an Auchterderran drop-in centre on Woodend Road without proving the use of each historic block.

Why it is included

Category C listing protects an ambitious and unusually extensive educational ensemble closely tied to coalfield population growth and later public-service adaptation.

What to notice

  • Repeated gables and dormerheads along the long west front.
  • Carved thistles, flowers and strapwork finials.
  • Former playground shelters and boundary walls framing the complex.

Reading the surroundings

Do not assume unrestricted entry. Use only clearly advertised community facilities, respect any occupied offices or private areas and view the wider school complex from public routes.

Timeline

  1. 1904 William Williamson completed the large junior secondary school.
  2. 1961 New accommodation extended the educational campus.
  3. 1989 Pupils transferred elsewhere and the school closed.
  4. 2026 Fife Council continued to list a community drop-in facility on Woodend Road.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The exact 2026 occupation of individual listed ranges was not independently established; the current-use wording therefore remains deliberately cautious.
